Growing up as the daughter of founders of the first private Vietnamese‑language newspaper in the Pacific Northwest, Julie witnessed firsthand the difference that community pride and visibility make. She reflects on her own identity journey noting that her parents reinforced in her that, “being a refugee is something to be proud of.” That belief guided her toward studying history in college, and ultimately toward turning curiosity into action.
