Rubber Band Rule: Recognize when your boundaries are being pushed

August 28, 2024 by Dr. Julie Pham Leave a Comment

Think of your boundaries as being stretchy, like a rubber band. You might take pride in how far you can stretch to accommodate others. But over time, as your boundaries are continually pushed, they can eventually snap like a rubber band. We call this the Rubber Band Rule which can serve to recognize when boundaries are pushed too far.

Here are four ways to identify if your boundaries are being stretched too much:

1. Physical Symptoms
You may experience physical discomfort, such as headaches or stomach aches.

2. Emotional Symptoms
You might feel anxious, depressed, or have low morale.

3. Complaints
You find yourself frequently complaining to others about the situation.

4. Resentment
You start resenting all requests, even those that used to make you happy.

These are signs that your boundaries are being pushed too far, and your rubber band is nearing its breaking point.

Knowing your limits is crucial. I hope you find this video helpful. If so, please like and share it!
