Effective Strategies for Making Friends as an Adult

April 11, 2024 by Dr. Julie Pham Leave a Comment

Let’s explore practical approaches to building friendships in adulthood. As adults, expanding our social circles outside of school or hometown communities presents its challenges. I’ll guide you through six venues for meeting potential friends and how to to nurture these connections.

  1. People you already know

Consider acquaintances you’d like to deepen your connection with and reach out to them.

  1. Leverage Your Current Network Request introductions from your circle—this is particularly beneficial when relocating or starting a new job. You’d be amazed at the connections your network can introduce you to..
  1. Engage in Online Communities

Online forums and groups offer a space to form meaningful friendships without the necessity of in-person interaction. This platform can be a treasure trove for connecting with like-minded individuals.

  1. Volunteer Your Time

Volunteering unites people under a common cause, making it easier to form friendships. My personal journey has been enriched by the bonds formed through community service.

  1. Participate in Meetup Groups

Explore interests through clubs, such as book or hiking groups. These gatherings are a fantastic way to engage in conversations about shared passions.

  1. Attend Networking Events

Though meeting a group of strangers might seem intimidating, networking events are designed for connection. To ease any nervousness, check out our tips on networking skills. Your local chamber of commerce is a great resource for finding these opportunities.

The key to making friends, regardless of where you meet them, is Follow-up

Establishing any relationship requires initiative. After meeting, take the step to follow up. Invite the person for a one-on-one chat, either in person or online, or suggest a group event if it feels more comfortable. Express your interest genuinely, perhaps by saying, “I enjoyed our conversation, and I’d love to hear more. Can we meet again?”

Friendship as an adult requires a blend of openness and effort. By stepping out of our comfort zones and pursuing these strategies, we can enrich our lives with new, meaningful connections.
